Stampede, Madness, and Sweet Potatoes
3.31.11
I hate sweet potatoes.
Not so much for their taste or texture, as my three-a-week trips to Boston Market will undoubtedly prove out, but for the damage they did to my head and neck.
See, Fullsteam was a sponsor of last night's Startup Stampede event, which was awesome, and they make this sweet potato beer, which is awesome.
My StatSheet colleague Mitch had this to say on the tweeter this morning:
What I learned at @startupstampede last night with @jproco ... stand near the beer, and the networking comes to you.
And I realized several things:
1) He's right.
2) This is sort of my MO.
3) I'm starting to get worn down.
4) That can only be a good thing.
The Stampede event was great, with lots of friendly people who are dead set on making sure this thing gets off the ground in a way that will cement Durham's place on the map for early stage startups.
I chatted with the folks from AppuWare, Blink Coupons, Clinical Ambassador, and some others, as well as Adam Klein, who filled me in on exactly the point of the Stampede and, as I assumed, more than to my satisfaction.
I'm rooting for all of them.
Mental Note: Column about how Durham's revitalization ate Raleigh's lunch.
Mental Note #2: Start my own event, get one of the dozens of incredible local craft brewers to co-sponsor (I'm looking at you Mystery), write off having to worry about my social life.

Tonight is Startup Madness -- well, today actually, right now, but I can't make the afternoon part.
At this point I can safely say that if you're not going, you're missing out. And I can tell you that as awful as I feel this morning, I'm still looking forward to this event tonight. Scott Kelly seems to have found his niche in terms of the tone and the right mix of successful entrepreneurs, budding entrepreneurs, and friends of entrepreneurs.
Not to mention dude was at the Stampede last night with a Startup Madness T-shirt over his shirt and tie.
That's commitment.
I hope to see you there tonight. I'll be at the press table.
Wait, who am I kidding. I'll be hanging out by the bar.
